WAN-IFRA is the global organisation of the world’s newspapers and news publishers, representing more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and over 3,000 companies in more than 120 countries. WAN-IFRA is unique in its position as a global industry association with a human rights mandate to defend and promote media freedom, and the economic independence of news media as an essential condition of that freedom.

Women in News (WIN), an initiative by WAN-IFRA, is seeking a Director, Operations & Insights to provide senior operational support to the overall Women in News initiative, and lead and grow WIN Insights, the research and advocacy arm of Women in News.

Women in News aims to increase women’s leadership and voices in the news. It does so by equipping women journalists and editors with the skills, strategies and support networks they need to take on greater leadership positions and editorial influence within the industry. In parallel, WIN partners with media organisations to identify industry-led solutions to close the gap between men and women in their newsrooms, boardrooms and in the content they produce. WIN is currently working with more than 90 media from 15 countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa, MENA and South East Asia.

WIN is structured under four distinct, yet mutually supporting initiatives:

WIN Leadership Accelerator is an intensive, 9-month long career and leadership programme for journalists and editors. The programme accepts 100 applicants, annually.  The Accelerator delivers targeted training in media management and practical newsroom skills, alongside intensive one-on-one coaching, mentoring and networking. 

WIN Future Leaders is designed to give aspiring journalists a head start in the media industry. Core activities of this progamme include career coaching, mentoring and networking, all delivered to journalism students by WIN Accelerator Alumnae. 

WIN Advisory delivers bespoke, in-house training and coaching on diversity and inclusion as well as media management topics to help media partners change their organisational cultures and improve operational performance. 

WIN Insights, the research and advocacy arm of WIN, aims to mobilize local advocacy and generate a global dialogue on gender equality and social impact issues through inclusive research, innovative tools, and lobbying and awareness raising. 

WIN is made possible through support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Position Details:

 Operations (40%)

  • Day-to-day management of Women in News’ operations and programming, including core organizational and project workflows to ensure administrative efficiency, compliance, and quality control of program delivery;
  • In coordination with Executive Director, serve as the interface between Finance & Administration and the extended WIN team to continually improve financial management systems, knowledge management, and internal communications structures and practices, identifying new approaches and tools to increase team collaboration and efficiencies and overcome workflow blockages.
  • Provide leadership on M&E approaches and ensure quality oversight in order to meet project obligations and donor requirements, developing and updating monitoring and evaluation systems (such as the Performance Management Framework) linked to key indicators for the purpose of informing program activities and reporting to the donor, and supporting continuous improvements in the process; including identifying training needs of staff working on the project and recommending actions for improving capacity with regard to M&E.
  • Oversight of regional M&E officer(s) to ensure M&E tasks (such as planning, coordination of monitoring and data collection for results and change stories) are effectively carried out in accordance with the expectations of the donor and on a consistent and continuous basis
  • Guide and mentor program managers and other team members on operational efficiencies and monitoring and evaluation tactics, with special support for operational risk management.

Insights (50%)

  • Lead Insights division of WIN in close cooperation with Executive Director, taking ownership of large scale research initiatives (approximately one per year) and development of handbooks and supporting tools in accordance with outputs identified in logframes, and priorities set by Executive Director,  whilst establishing and maintaining end-to-end quality assurance that unites WIN’s commitment to inclusiveness with WAN-IFRA’s global community of experts from within the industry.
  • Specific deliverables for 2020 include:
    • End-to-end execution of first ever WIN-led global research initiative on sexual harassment
    • With direct support from digital products manager and communications director
    • launch digital products such as the sexual harassment interactive tool and gender balance online resource
    • Provide strategic and practical support to digital products manager to bring to market WIN Gender Tracker
    • Provide support to regional directors in application and development of existing Advisory modules on Sexual Harassment, Gender Balance in News Content to ensure extended reach and impact-focused approach is applied.
    • In coordination with digital products manager and regional teams, develop online versions of Sexual Harassment and Gender Balance modules into online training tools, either using WAN-IFRA MMA or other e-learning platforms.
    • Provide support to digital products manager and comms lead in development of new WIN website and WIN rebrand

Direct reports: (Digital Products Manager, Regional Research & Knowledge Managers (dual reporting), Coordinator (shared resource)

This position reports into: Executive Director, Women in News; Director, Media Development


  • Masters level degree or above in a media or development field or another relevant social science discipline
  • Minimum 10 years progressive professional experience in project management in the not-for-profit sector, with at least 5 years project management experience in gender and/or media development fields
  • Minimum 5 years progressive experience in organisational and/or human resource management in the not-for-profit sector
  •  Proven record in successful change management in the not-for-profit sector
  • Proven experience in setting up and managing financial management systems and processes in the not-for-profit sector 
  • Management of organisation and project budgets for amounts exceeding 1 million Euros per annum.
  • Proven knowledge and experience of developing and implementing Monitoring & Evaluation processes and tools, preferably for gender and media specific programmes
  • Proven record of success in project design and proposals.
  • In-depth knowledge of gender and diversity issues and specifically the trends and challenges faced by the media industry globally
  • Proven record in creation (or managing the creation) of gender and diversity focused resources/tools for use in the media and media development advocacy and capacity building space 
  • Research, statistical and data analysis experience and skills
  • Experience with project management systems and tools specifically for the not-for-profit sector
  • Advanced digital literacy, including experience using collaboration tools such as G-Suite, Slack and Asana.
  • Lived and/or worked in sub-Saharan Africa or the Arab region for at least 5 years, or extensive knowledge of these regions.
